Innovative treatment for ED: a new heart implant!

The latest trend in terms of ED treatment in the UK is using heart implants. Since the main reason for erectile dysfunction is the slow level of blood flow, a new heart significantly improves the situation. Statistics show that more than a half of the men aged between 40-70 years old suffer from erectile dysfunction, which in time leads to a lower self-esteem, lower self-confidence and unsatisfactory sexual life.

This surgery involves the implant of a stent (which is basically a small metal tube) into the penis. This will widen the penis artery and allow more blood flow to fill in the penis chambers and decrease the effects of erectile dysfunction. The team of doctors who developed this study hopes that one third of their patients can be cured through this surgery.

The blockages caused by the furring of the arteries do not allow enough space to receive the necessary amount of blood flow to maintain an erection. The stents are widely used to widen these blocked arteries in the heart. In the case of penis surgery, the stent device used has a dimension ranging from 1mm up to 3mm, based on the size of the penis artery.

However, in order to treat ED by means of a new heart implant it is required to make some prior tests to be sure that the erectile dysfunction problem is caused by a blocked artery. If yes, the surgery is performed under local anesthetics, it lasts up to 3 hours and its total costs ranges between 4.000 up to 7.000 pounds. The stent is not felt at all and the patients are able to go home in the same day, after surgery. Whether this solution is appropriate for a specific patient, it requires some prior tests. But it is definitely effective from the medical point of view.

This would be a revolutionary achievement since ED could be easily cured and eliminated. This is also a threat for pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer (the producer of Viagra), Cialis or Levitra pills. In the case of more severe ED situations, it is recommended the treatment with injections or penis pumps. But there are many related side effects to these methods.
