More Memory under Windows 95

January 25, 1998

Many people who use memory hungry programs ask me how to increse there Windows 95 memory. Here is a little trick I have been using. The tip is to use emm386.exe ram and the following switches: frame=none I=b000-b7ff. The frame=none switch eliminates the 64 kb frame usually used by EMS memory, and the I= (include switch) enables the use of monochrome monitor memory. Using the ram switch enables you to use all available memory as Extended Memory, which makes running memoryhungry programs possible. Also be sure to add localoadhigh=1 the [386enh] section of SYSTEM.INI to make Windows 95 launch DOS sessions with more memory.Tom's Note: Be sure to check that your system isn't using b000-b7ff for something else. It is rare indeed but always check.

Avoiding Spam

Throughout one's travels on the internet it is more then likely that one has heard the term "Spam" In a nutshell Spam is simply garbage email or postings that is unsolicited or of an off topic.

Who are the spanners? There are companies that offer bulk emailing for a fee. It is not uncommon for them to send out 100's of gigabits on a daily basis. In many ways Spam is like the real life junk mail. The email address is obtained categorized and put into a database and sold to separate bulk emails.

There is a more severe problem then just being annoying. Bottlenecking occurs shortly after Spam is sent out. Imagine 100,000,000 emails going out on a daily basis. It is much like a drain after a heavy rainstorm. Packets are sent across the entire Internet looking for their homes. Getting the information you want on the net seems more like a line at Disney world then a super highway. In a nutshell Spam is a major reason that the Internet gets very slow or sluggish at times.

The solutions: First don't post in newsgroups. Your email address will be sucked up by the bulk emails and sold to just about everybody who's anybody in the Spam world. Next, avoid at all costs filling out forms on the Internet. This includes surveys, guest books or credit card applications. If you must post or fill out forms, get an alias email address such as: geocities, hotmail etc. It you start reciving too much junk mail here is a program called
spamicide. I just begun to use it, but it looks real good!
